I’ve lived in the Washington area for most of my adult life and have dabbled in politics, public broadcasting, advertising and government relations in Denver, Dallas, and New York - something of a "checkered" past. I was recently the victim of what was euphemistically called an “employment separation.” What a perfect opportunity to switch gears completely and put to work the sewing skills my mother taught me when I was a child! And I've never looked back.
I love handbags and I know I'm not alone in thinking those beautiful purses for special occasions are just too small. I don't carry a lot when I go out in the evening, but I want a purse that has enough room for a comb, a small wallet, keys, lipstick, a cell phone and, yes, reading glasses -- without my date having to carry half my things in his pockets! And the purse needs to be elegant and sophisticated at the same time. I couldn't find what I wanted...so, I designed it myself.
My purses are 100% silk, inside and out, and I use both solid color and embroidered silk - usually Dupioni since it's a bit stronger than other silks. I then line each bag with a silk shantung or Dupioni silk to complement the outside of the purse. Linings may be in plaid or embroidered fabrics (in fact, sometimes, I have more fun choosing the lining than I do the outside). Between each layer of silk, I place a lining of netting to ensure the bag won't lose its slight balloon shape. And each bag has a small pocket inside for keys or lipstick. I then use top-notch trims and hardware, which varies from antique brass, to crystal beads, to gold or silver chains. I personally design and hand craft each purse just for you!
I also work with silk velvet material for beautiful holiday bags that are lined with a silk tartan plaid. And I've recently created a line of bridal bags which can be customized to match the design of an individual gown or specific wedding.
I love to travel and have spent many years enjoying new experiences in the U.S. and abroad. I expect to do much more traveling in the future -- but the museums and cathedrals of the world will have to wait. I'm now on a quest for the perfect fabric!
